Patrick and Carol West established this scholarship in memory of their son, Christopher, in 1976.
Chris was 11 years old when he passed away in 1976 from Hodgkin's disease. Chris was an excellent student and active in student government. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, basketball, and skiing. When he was receiving chemotherapy and radiology he had a very positive attitude and encouraged other children and adults who were also receiving treatment. He enjoyed collecting food for the underprivileged and participating in other community projects. His scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have been active in making their communities a better place to live. Students exhibiting leadership skills by being active in school activities and helping their fellow students are keys to being considered for his scholarship. It has helped hundreds of Gonzaga students since 1977.
The West's have two other children, Kevin and Kelli. Both attended the Gonzaga-in-Florence program and Kevin graduated from GU in 1985. Pat has been closely involved with Gonzaga since 1965 when he volunteered to raise funds for the Great Teachers Program. He was elected to the Board of Regents in 1973 and was President of the Regents in 1982 and 1983. He was asked to be a Trustee in 1983 and was President of the Trustees board in 1992 and 1993. He continues to serve as a Trustee and is a member of the investment committee and development committee. Carol is a member of the Jundt Museum Advisory Board and has been the chairperson for a number of GU celebrations. Both of them are big Zag fans and attend many of the athletic contests.
Many of Pat and Carol's closest friends are regents and trustees and they have a wonderful friendship with Bernard J. Coughlin, S.J., the former President and current Chancellor of Gonzaga University. In addition to their GU involvement, Pat and Carol are very active on Boards at the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane which Carol helped start after Chris passed away.
Pat is a Spokane native and attended Gonzaga Prep where they have also started a Chris West scholarship fund. Carol was born in Seattle and the two of them met while they were in High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Both of them attended the University of Arizona in Tucson. Pat has a B.S. in finance and an MBA from the U of A. Pat taught finance courses as a graduate assistant during his MBA studies and Carol worked at the local newspaper to help make ends meet. They moved to Los Angeles and Pat worked for Unocal for two years before moving to Spokane in 1965. After forty years of being a stockbroker and financial consultant, Pat retired from Smith Barney in 2005. They love to travel and Carol has been very successful creating and making her own line of jewelry.
