McCarthey

Phil McCarthey (’74) established this scholarship in 1993 to assist students attending the Gonzaga-in-Florence program.

The first awards were given in 1995. Phil remembers that his own experience in Florence was a major turning point in his life and does not want a deserving student to miss out on the Florence experience due to financial need.

McCarthey received his bachelors’ degree in English from Gonzaga in 1974. He then entered the financial services world and eventually moved back to Salt Lake where he opened his own firm. He received his CLU designation in 1991.

In addition to the Gonzaga Board, he served for many years on the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Utah Chapter, including five years as Chair. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005 for his work in the Dinner of Champions and founder of Women Against Multiple Sclerosis. Phil continues to serve on the Rowland Hall St. Mark’s School Board in Salt Lake City.

Phil and his wife Sandra (University of Nebraska 1974) have two daughters, Molly – Gonzaga in Florence 2005-2006 and Mairin – Gonzaga University class of 2010.

McCarthey said that he chose to give back to the Gonzaga-in-Florence program because it gave so much to him. Phil has given back to Gonzaga in many other ways as well as being a long-time volunteer regent and trustee. His family funded the lead gift for the McCarthey Athletic Center.
