CERTIFICATE IN INTERNATIONAL MEDIA
A Cultural Immersion Project
part of the
MA PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP STUDIES

GONZAGA UNIVERSITY
Gonzaga University’s Masters program in Communication and Leadership Studies www.gonzaga.edu/coml announces its new Certificate in International Media. The MA Program has a tradition of global, cross-disciplinary, practical emphasis in Communication and Leadership. In this new certificate program students have both a cultural immersion experience as well as practical experiential learning. The University has joined forces with the International Institute for Media Education http://www.ieimedia.com/ in offering this 12 graduate credit certificate. The credits can also be applied to the Masters Degree Program in Communication and Leaderships Studies at Gonzaga.
Six credits of this curriculum are taken either at the Gonzaga campus in Spokane, Washington or online in any location in the world.
Online or campus-based classes:
COML 508 Theorizing Communication (3 credits)
COML 509 Social Dynamics of Communication Technologies (3 credits)
Cultural Immersion classes in Italy and/or Northern Ireland:
COML 513 Advanced Topics in Communication: International Media and Culture (3 credits)
COML 517-518-519 Communication Practica in Speaking, Writing and Multi-Media (3 credits)
Our Summer Project aims are manifold:
• To immerse students in a spectrum of foreign cultures.
• To develop leadership skills in working with culturally diverse populations.
• To expose students to the practice of international journalism at the grass roots level, far from the political and economic power centers.
• To teach students the journalistic form of the “web documentary.”
• To enable students to master all the technical tools necessary to create a web site.
• To educate students in the language and customs of another culture and impart the requisite survival skills.
• To introduce students to the protocols of “professionalism” and to teach them how to work as part of a team.
• To teach students how to write gracefully and perceptively through such guided practices as journal keeping.
• To develop leadership skills in working with culturally diverse populations.
The participating faculty are strongly committed to an emphasis on:
• Writing
• Experiential Learning
• Internationalism and Interculturalism
• Media convergence
• Ethics and Media Leadership
Projects Planned for Summer 2008:
The Cagli Media Project : a multimedia summer program in a "small Italian town” involving the creation of a web documentary, a new and evolving form of journalism. Project 1 May 28-June 24, 2008. Project II June 25 - July 23 (2008 CAGLI PROJECT II IS CLOSED).
The Armagh Media Project, Armagh, Northern Ireland, July 23 - August 19 (2008 ARMAGH PROJECT IS CLOSED).
Admissions into the Certificate Program or Masters Degree.
Those students not interested in receiving the Certificate can sign up for the Cultural Immersion Project only.

Certificate Program Costs:
The International Residential experience costs for 2008 is $5,630. (Airfare not Included).
This amount includes six credits graduate tuition, shared residence, a meal plan, technology fees and courses in one of our two centers. In addition, weekend travel is planned for increasing cultural understanding. Class schedules vary from sight to sight but are generally planned for Monday – Thursday allowing independent travel on weekends.
