Role Responsibilities
The clinical faculty evaluates students during the clinical courses and provides both formative and summative feedback.
The evaluation is conducted through:
- Evaluation of written documentation.
- Observation of the student with patients in the clinical setting.

Clinical Faculty Instructions for On-site Evaluation
You will conduct clinical evaluation of students each semester and observe them conducting a session with a patient.
- Review patient notes written by the student if available.
- Gather feedback as available from the student’s preceptor in the areas of professional/therapeutic communication, interviewing/assessment skills, interpersonal NP patient relationship, formulation of diagnosis and treatment plan, critical thinking and application of Advanced Clinical Psychiatric Nursing Practice.
- At the conclusion of the visit, give detailed constructive feedback to the student including areas for improvement.
- If you have any concerns and need to make an additional site visit please discuss with course faculty prior to making that decision.
- Complete and submit all travel expense reimbursement forms to the Department of Nursing within 30 days. All requests for reimbursement submitted more than 60 days post evaluative visit will NOT be accepted by the department.
- Complete a final evaluation and summary of student’s performance that includes grades for journals, process notes, and self-evaluation. Submit this summary and final grade to Blackboard.
Communication with Preceptor and Student
This WAC states that nursing faculty, as responsible for the overall supervision and evaluation of the student, must confer simultaneously (at the same time) with each primary preceptor, and student three times during the student learning experience:(a) Beginning;
(b) Midpoint; and
(c) End.
Students will be expected to assume a leadership role in scheduling the 3 points of contact as outlined below:
