Erasmus Week in Romania
Ashley Davis, Director of International Students and Scholar Services in Gonzaga's Center for Global Engagement, traveled to Romania this spring for Erasmus+ Week. There, she connected with global engagement colleagues from universities around the world. Below are her reflections from her time in Romania.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been involved with the Erasmus+ partnership process since the beginning when Dr. Popa first introduced the idea and his connections to Gonzaga. Even in the small ways I was able to support the process, I was very excited as I knew the European Commission funded Erasmus+ is a very prestigious program. Dr. Popa’s dedication and vision have opened a wonderful opportunity for Gonzaga student, faculty, and staff.
I was overjoyed when I had a chance to attend the Erasmus+ International Education Week this past May 2025, hosted by our amazing partner university, West University of Timișoara (UVT). As someone whose life has been shaped by study abroad and who deeply believes in the power of global engagement, the experience still far exceeded my expectations.
More than 50 colleagues from over 30 countries gathered for the week. I loved learning from so many cultural perspectives, discovering shared challenges and aspirations, and exploring potential new partnerships. There were many interesting sessions, but I was especially drawn by those focused on TimiÈ™oara’s history and culture. They expanded my understanding which still has clear impact on me today.
One of my goals for the week was to see firsthand what our out-bound students will experience during their exchange at UVT. After spending time with UVT’s experienced Erasmus+ staff, meeting such warm and generous people, and witnessing the ease and beauty of daily life in the city, I feel completely confident that our students will thrive there. It is a wonderful place to learn, grow, and feel at home in the world. Not to mention, Timisoara has so many delicious cultural cuisines!!
