About This Event
Naturalization for resident immigrants has taken on new meaning in this era of forced migration, walls and deportations. On April 8 and 9, you can participate in any of four opportunities to learn more about what it takes to become a U.S. citizen, celebrate with new Americans as they take the oath of citizenship, and volunteer to counsel immigrants interested in exploring citizenship requirements.
What It Takes to Become a Citizen
Monday, April 8, Noon, Room 226
Join Professor Megan Ballard to learn more about the naturalization process. Participants can test their knowledge of US government and history by taking part of the citizenship exam. Attendance is not required for involvement in other parts of the Citizenship Week.
Student Training for Citizenship Advocacy and Immigrant Consultation Clinic
Monday, April 8, 5 - 6:30 P.M., Room 226
Following the Oath Ceremony on April 9, student volunteers will help counsel immigrants interested in pursuing citizenship. This evening session is required if you would like to volunteer as a Citizenship Advocate. It will prepare you to help prospective applicants understand the eligibility requirements for naturalization. This training will also help to prepare students to volunteer with an immigrant Consultation Clinic, tentatively planned for this summer. Immigration attorneys Megan Case (Catholic Charities), Alycia Moss (Moss Immigration Law), and Vanessa Mathisen (World Relief) will co-teach this evening session.
Citizenship Oath Ceremony
Tuesday, April 9, Noon, Barbieri Courtroom
Help friends and families celebrate as Judge Rosanna Malouf Peterson from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington administers the oath of citizenship to new Americans.
Citizenship Advocacy
Tuesday, April 9, 1-2:30 P.M., Barbieri Courtroom
Counsel immigrants on the eligibility requirements for naturalization. To volunteer as a Citizenship Advocate, you must attend the evening training session on April 8. This work will count toward your community service hours.
