About This Event
In this talk, Melissa Click, Ph.D., explores the increased visibility of dislike, disgust, and hatred expressed in and toward fan cultures, which she attributes to the development of contemporary digital media. Referencing media studies scholarship, and cultural studies of emotion, Click explores the work that hate does online, suggesting that the critical analysis of hate is crucial to understanding, and maintaining civility in, our digital media environment. Her talk will draw upon her recent edited collection on hate and fan studies, Anti-fandom: Dislike and Hate in the Digital Age (New York University Press, 2019).
The College of Arts & Sciences presents two Dean's Research & Creative Activity Forums each semester, inviting faculty who have published books, built collaborations, or made notable advancements in their fields to share details of their work with colleagues, students, and members of the community.
