About This Event
This 3 p.m. event has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Please join SEAS at 4 p.m. in Jepson's Wolff Auditorium for the Renouard Lecture by Dr. Michael Kintner-Meyer, taking place as scheduled.
Timothy J. Carlsen, PE received an MS through the Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame. He currently works for Affiliated Engineering Laboratories in Edison, New Jersey as a consulting forensic engineer, specializing in civil, environmental and structural engineering matters. He'll talk about forensic engineering, the Prevention through Design initiative, and benefits of a PE license.
Prevention through Design
One of the best ways to prevent and control occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities is to "design out" or minimize hazards and risks. NIOSH leads a national initiative called Prevention through Design (PtD). PtD's purpose is to promote this concept and highlight its importance in all business decisions -- work methods, equipment and tools, organization of work, and the products themselves.
Engineering and Forensics
Not all failures are catastrophic. Forensic engineering investigates a range of failures or performance problems. It can involve testimony on the findings of these investigations before a court of law.
PE - Professional Engineer License
The PE is the common license in the engineering profession - in several fields of engineering, earning the PE may be required and, overall, can provide several benefits to the practicing engineer.
