About This Event

Dr. Eunice Kim, Minority Post-doctoral Fellow will discuss how Greek colonial movements were conceptualized in the early Greek imagination. She focuses on two distinct modes—both a masculine and feminine one—of founding land in Greek myth. Examination of colonization in myth from the lens of gender reveals that the movements and treatments of male and female bodies are each associated with the creation of civic and regional bodies respectively. Both narratives encode hints of violence that reveal a concern for emphasizing successful integration and local continuity in the colonial process.
