50 years after the Bunker Hill mine fire caused one of the largest lead-poisoning cases in US history. Assistant Professor of Nursing Martin Schiavenato wrote in "The Conversation" about how lead still contaminates the soil across Idaho's Silver Valley, and continues to wash down tributaries and into the Coeur d'Alene River and Lake Coeur d'Alene. Many people in this fast-growing region are unaware of the risks.

On Sept. 3, 1973, a fire swept through the baghouse of the Bunker Hill mine in Idaho's Silver Valley. The building was designed to filter pollutants produced by smelting, the melting of rocks that separates metal from its ore. The gases produced in this process carried poisons, including lead.

Julie Wolter served at University of Montana as associate vice provost for innovation and online learning after serving five years as chair and professor in school speech, language, hearing and occupational sciences. She is now joining Gonzaga University as Dean of Nursing and Human Physiology.

Pending approval by the Board of Trustees, the School of Nursing and Human Physiology will soon shift to being called the School of Health Sciences, and Julie Wolter will be named as its new dean.

"I started off as human physiology and never switched majors, and I never questioned it," graduating senior Rhys Heenan says. "I knew that the department was a perfect match for me."
