Tomy Gertsch

Hooker Creek Ranch Scholarship

2010-2011 Recipient:  Tomy Gertsch

The best things about living in a small town, according to Tomy:  "You are never overwhelmed by traffic, you can always see the stars at night, and you are never too far from nature."

Tomy is from Hermiston, Oregon, where her father is a manager, salesman, and crop advisor for an agricultural firm, and her mother owns an exercise studio.

Tomy is the first from her family to come to Gonzaga, a school she chose because of the University's commitment to service and to educating the "whole person."  She is a History major who is involved in many activities: "I have been a member of the Black Student Union, Circle K International (a Kiwanis Collegiate Program; Treasurer), History Club (VP), Phi Alpha Theta (History National Honor Society; Secretary), Multicultural Honor Society, and Campus Kids (mentoring program). Through these clubs I have acted as a mentor, a tutor, and a monthly service volunteer for organizations like 2nd Harvest, Catholic Charities, and the Spokane Valley Book Bank."

After she graduates, Tomy has a plan in mind, with a back up, "just in case." Her "A" plan is to serve in Teach for America for two years, then apply to graduate school. Plan "B" is to work in a business environment to gain experience in business, specifically management, and then return to school to pursue an MBA.

"I would like to convey my deepest appreciation for this scholarship. It has helped me earn an education at a great institution which I will greatly miss."
