When the new sign was revealed on The Sabonis Family Strength and Conditioning Center, the moment felt somehow bigger than just a dedication. It was also a homecoming. Certainly, it was a celebration, as friends, family members, former teammates, coaches, student-athletes and supporters gathered to recognize one of Gonzaga basketball's most accomplished alumni and his family for their generosity. Cameras flashed. Applause filled the air. Heads turned toward the newly unveiled name, but what unfolded July 9, 2026, was a moment of reflection and gratitude for a significant investment in a formative program.

The Sabonis family reveals the new sign on The Sabonis Family Strength and Conditioning CenterYears before becoming an NBA All-Star, before international recognition and professional accolades, Domantas Sabonis arrived in Spokane as a young student-athlete looking for a place to grow. As the son of basketball legend Arvydas Sabonis, he carried one of the most recognizable names in the sport. Yet, from the moment he stepped onto the Gonzaga University campus, those who knew him best saw a player determined to build his own path through relentless effort, humility and a commitment to becoming better every day. In many ways, his story reflected the story Gonzaga Basketball has been telling for decades, of potential transformed through discipline, mentorship, community and hard work.

During his two seasons in a Gonzaga uniform, Sabonis became one of the most impactful players in program history. His toughness, basketball intelligence and tireless work ethic helped propel the Zags to new heights while further cementing Gonzaga's emergence as a national power.

Head Coach Mark Few “Domantas earned the respect of everyone in our program through his relentless work ethic, toughness, and unwavering commitment to his teammates,” Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Few said. "He truly embodies what it means to be a Zag. Those same qualities are evident in the way he and Shashana have chosen to give back to Gonzaga."

This is a significant gift from a remarkable family, and we're deeply grateful for their generosity. Their investment will have a lasting impact on student-athletes and help ensure future generations of Bulldogs have every opportunity to grow and succeed.”

Those who watched Zag basketball closely then understood that Sabonis’ growth extended far beyond the stat sheet. Like generations of Gonzaga students before him, Sabonis was immersed in an environment designed to produce successful athletes, thoughtful leaders, engaged citizens, devoted family members and people prepared to make meaningful contributions wherever life might lead them.

That philosophy has long been at the heart of the Gonzaga experience. This is a university where athletics matter.  Academic excellence matters. Leadership and community matter, and in the Gonzaga philosophy, each attribute strengthens the others. The lessons learned in classrooms, residence halls, service projects, practices, locker rooms and late-night conversations become integral parts of every student's formation. Together, they create something larger than any individual achievement.

It is why Gonzaga's impact can be found not only in professional arenas and boardrooms, but in hospitals, schools, nonprofits, businesses, churches, neighborhoods and communities around the world. For some, the path begins in a classroom, while for others, like Sabonis, it begins on a court. All in all, the destination is the same: lives of purpose, service, and leadership.

President Katia Passerini celebrating

At Gonzaga, we strive to form people who will use their gifts in service of others,” said Gonzaga University President Katia Passerini, Ph.D. “Domantas and Shashana's generosity reflects the values at the heart of our mission: excellence, community, gratitude and a commitment to creating opportunities for future generations."

The naming of the Sabonis Family Strength and Conditioning Center represents an investment in future generations of student-athletes who will follow their own paths toward impact through Gonzaga. Athletic Director Chris Standiford said of the Sabonis Family’s investment:

This gift is about much more than a facility. It's about setting a standard. Domantas and Shashana are demonstrating what lifelong engagement looks like. They're showing current student-athletes that being a Zag doesn't end when you leave campus. It becomes part of who you are."

Every season begins long before opening night, in spaces like the one that now bears the Sabonis Family name. Before the crowds arrive, rankings are released, or championships are in sight, the work starts in Spokane with early mornings and late evenings, through repetition and discipline that demonstrate the quiet commitment all Zags share to becoming stronger than you were the day before.

Future Zags will enter The Sabonis Family Strength and Conditioning Center carrying dreams of their own. Several have become professional athletes, while others pursue careers in business, education, health sciences, engineering, public service, or entrepreneurship. All of them leave Gonzaga shaped by the experiences, relationships and opportunities they encounter along the way.

Strong athletic programs elevate universities, creating visibility, attracting talent, inspiring pride, strengthening alumni engagement and financial support, and opening doors for future students. Athletic programs become gateways through which countless people discover an institution's mission and values. When Gonzaga Basketball succeeds, the entire university benefits. When Gonzaga's reputation grows, opportunities expand for students across every discipline. When alumni remain engaged, future generations gain access to experiences that might otherwise never exist. And that ripple effect reaches far beyond campus boundaries. It touches Spokane, strengthens the Inland Northwest, and reinforces Gonzaga's growing influence across the nation and around the world. Perhaps most importantly, this moment helps tell an essential story about what it means to be a Zag.

The Gonzaga experience does not end at graduation. It does not end when a student-athlete plays their final game. It does not end when professional success arrives. Instead, the Gonzaga experience creates a lifelong relationship rooted in connection, gratitude and shared responsibility. The strongest communities are built by people who remember the hands that helped lift them and choose, in turn, to extend those opportunities to others. That is what makes this moment so meaningful.

The Sabonis family has chosen to celebrate what Gonzaga helped make possible in their own lives by investing in what Gonzaga can make possible for others.

In doing so, Domantas and Shashana have become stewards of a legacy that extends well beyond basketball, demonstrating a powerful form of leadership that says success is not measured solely by what we achieve for ourselves, but by what we help create for those who follow.

Domantas Sabonis

“I’m incredibly grateful for the important role Gonzaga has played in my life and the opportunities the University has given me,” said Domantas Sabonis. “My time here helped shape who I am, not only as a basketball player but as a person."

My family and I are honored to make this gift because we believe in Gonzaga’s commitment to developing student athletes on and off the court each and every day.

Sabonis continued, "We hope that every student who walks into this facility is reminded that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your dreams. Gonzaga will always be home to us, so we’re proud to help invest in the next generation of Bulldogs.”

Long after the dedication ceremony concludes, another student-athlete will walk into this space. They may be nervous, hopeful, and carrying ambitions that seem impossibly large. They will look up and see a family name—an example and reminder that greatness is not simply about reaching the highest levels of achievement. It is also about remembering where you came from, staying connected to the communities that shaped you, creating opportunities for others, and ensuring that the next generation has every chance to write a story of its own.

Join Domantas and Shashana in making a difference for the next generation of Zags.
