Solid Support

To further secure the Jesuit roots of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., a nine-foot bronze sculpture of St. Ignatius of Loyola now graces the main entrance to the campus, along with a reflecting pool and redesigned landscape. Designed by internationally renowned sculptor George Carlson, the "Meditation" statue was installed last fall to represent St. Ignatius' contemplative moment of transformation and the ripple effect of his vision and wisdom throughout the worlds.

About the Maquette

Artist George Carlson makes smaller versions, known as maquettes, before his final piece. Gonzaga University requested that these 16" maquettes be cast in bronze and sit atop a polished granite base. The 50 limited-edition maquettes are being offered at $5,000 apiece as a fundraiser to help offset the costs of the monument and landscaping. All profits from the sale of the casts, after foundry casting costs, will go toward the project. Each cast is signed, numbered and includes an artist's letter of authenticity. As in all of Carlson's work, he personally attends to each piece by completing metal and wax chasing and patina finishing by hand. Each cast includes a brass plate which identifies the date completed, title, edition and artist's name. For more information or to order your own maquette, please contact University Relations at (509) 313-5995.
