Meet the Faculty: Dr. Emma Ariyo
I currently teach in the M.A. in Sport and Athletic Administration program.
SPMT 525: Sport & Athletics in Society
SPMT 514: Sport Law and Ethics
What is your career/research background?
My academic path began with an undergraduate degree in Art and Design in Uganda. I later earned an MBA from the University of Bridgeport, and after completing that program, I decided to pursue sport management because of my background as a former student-athlete in volleyball and soccer. I went on to complete a Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a focus on Sport Management and Policy at the University of Georgia. Professionally, I taught at Washington State University for two years before joining Gonzaga University, where I currently teach in Sport Management and MASAA.
My research centers on the cultural study of sport, with particular attention to Black female athlete identity and sporting experiences. I also explore sport for development and sport as a tool for social change.
What is your favorite sport/team?
Manchester United
What do you love about the sport industry?
The sport industry is fluid. It's always evolving, adapting, and creating new opportunities. It combines passion, community, and purpose. It brings people together, creates meaningful experiences, and constantly evolves with new challenges and innovations. I also love interacting with and seeing students grow into confident professionals who will influence/shape the future of the sport industry. It is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.
What advice do you have for students?
Stay curious, be proactive, and take advantage of every opportunity like internships, networking, volunteering, and mentorship. The sport industry is built on relationships, so the more you put yourself out there, the more doors will open.
