*Full class meetings: During this time, Summer Institute participants (SIP's) will explore a variety of concepts from the field of second language learning and teaching through readings, discussions, guest presentations and hands-on activities. Active participation is required, both individually and in groups. Sample class meetings include: Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching, Oral Communication, Literacy, Language and Cultural Issues, Materials and Management, Gonzaga's 'Have Text, Will Travel' and Small Talk, Student Lesson Presentations, and much more.
*Language Camp participation: Daily participation in the Language Camp will provide an authentic environment for applying what has been discussed in the full class meetings. SIP's will not only observe, but also interact with the students and be responsible for part of their instruction.
2-day Sample Curriculum
Day 1 - Building a Community of Learners
- Welcome and introductions
- Warm-up and warm-up process (using sample handouts)
- Daily Warm-up assignment
- Syllabus, graduate and undergraduate credit requirements,
and other business - Discuss observation tasks
- Observation Orientation at 1:00 p.m.
Day 2 - The Child's Brain: Syllable From Sound
- Participant-led warm-up
- Video preview questions
- Watch video about the brain and language acquisition
- Debrief
- More Second Language Acquisition
- 1:00 Observation, discussions and reflections
Course Requirements
SIP's will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Daily attendance
- Active participation
- Completion of all reading homework assignments
- Completion of a portfolio which will be detailed on the first day of class
*Those participants who have registered for graduate credits will be required to create additional curriculum and write a 2-page paper, in addition to the requirements above.
