Why did you decide to return to school for a master’s degree?

I had always wanted to go back to school and pursue a higher degree, I had made the intention before I even got my Bachelors. The security in having a license linked to an advanced degree is an investment that pays many life dividends.

Why did you pick Gonzaga and the MSN-PMHNP program?

Several of my co workers had gone through Gonzaga or were going to Gonzaga and this allowed me to obtain a level of familiarity with the program and the University.

What skills did you develop in the program?

The biggest skill I developed was confidence. Going from first quarter clinicals unsure of whether I could get the skills to perform by myself to the last quarter and being comfortable with my new role was a drastic change in mentality that I distinctly remember.

What has been your return on investment?

Though I just graduated, the outlook for ROI is substantial. I would estimate it is about 30% higher than I would have had without getting my Advance degree.

What was your favorite part about the on-campus immersions?

Spending the weekend in person with the staff and classmates to bond and reflect in person. I especially enjoyed guest speakers.

How was your experience with clinicals? What was the process like?

Clinicals can be challenging to get on a timely and consistent basis. However, due diligence and constant communication with the school’s facilitators will go a long way in having a smooth clinical experience. Also, make contacts with your classmates and learn from each other how they entered their clinicals.

What surprised you about the program?

How easy it was to get along with the instructors. Especially in later quarters, it felt very much they were more like your peers in the same field and were preparing you to perform in your new role as they had been.

How was your experience with the faculty?

Faculty was very warm, communicative and understanding. One thing about an advanced degree is that the Instructors are trying to make sure you get to the finish line and help you understand what it feels like to be in a Provider’s role.

How did the program allow you to balance work/life/school?

I had a full time work schedule. The flexibility I had in online portions of class as well as elongating my clinical experience allowed me to both work full time and graduate in a timely manner.

What advice would you give to anyone considering Gonzaga’s MSN-PMHNP program?

One step after the next. It’s just going to be one day after the other, one week after another. Persevere and you will be on the other end of it before you realize.
