Learn All Sides of Sport with Gonzaga's M.A. in Sport and Athletic Administration
Gonzaga's M.A. in Sport and Athletic Administration is designed to give students a full understanding of working in the sport industry. Alumna, Karina Maciel shares her experience in the program and how it has helped her in her current career with UCLA Athletics.
Why did you decide to return to school for a master's degree?
The sports industry is one of the most competitive places to get a job, so I decided to return to school and earn my master's degree to set myself apart from other applicants and to learn applicable skills that would help me in my future roles.
Why did you pick the M.A. in Sport and Athletic Administration and Gonzaga?
While working at Gonzaga Athletics, I had the opportunity to work closely with many undergraduate sport management students and MASAA candidates, whose intelligence, professionalism, and strong work ethic served as proof of the high quality of the program. Additionally, Gonzaga offered a fully remote program which made it possible for me to pursue my graduate degree while working full-time.
What do you do for work and what does your role look like?
I currently work at UCLA Athletics as the Assistant Director of Marketing and Fan Experiences. In this role, I oversee marketing and game day experience efforts for the women's volleyball, gymnastics, and softball programs while supporting other department-wide initiatives. My responsibilities include developing and executing marketing campaigns, managing print and digital trade advertising partnerships, overseeing on-campus marketing projects, and ideating strategies to increase student engagement. Because the marketing department collaborates with nearly every area of UCLA Athletics, much of my day is spent coordinating with our sponsorship, communications, ticketing, creative, and event operations teams to bring campaigns, promotions, and game day experiences to life.
What skills did you develop in the program and how have they set you up for success in your career?
One of the biggest skills I took away from the MASAA program was an ability to view sports through various lenses. By taking classes in areas like finance, facility management, and social impact, I gained an understanding of how sporting decisions will impact other areas and this has helped me collaborate across departments more effectively.
What advice would you give to someone considering Gonzaga's MASAA program?
One piece of advice I would give to someone considering Gonzaga's MASAA program is to take advantage of its flexibility. Because the MASAA program is offered in both in-person and remote formats, you can choose the format that works best for your life style. Even if you choose the in-person option, there is flexibility to take online courses or move around some classes if needed.
What is it like to work in sports?
Working in sports is rewarding because no two days are ever the same. Every season brings new challenges, opportunities, and memorable experiences that make the work exciting. While the hours can be demanding at times, there is a unique sense of purpose that comes from contributing to something bigger than yourself. When a team wins a championship or reaches a major milestone, you get to share in that success with them and the entire athletic department.
