Nursing Faculty Spotlight: Lindsey Anagnostopoulos
What initially attracted you to Gonzaga University? How has your experience aligned with your initial expectations as you journeyed through your time here?
I strongly align with Gonzaga’s mission statement, especially the sections addressing whole person development and social justice. To me, this mission fits perfectly with the nursing profession and with my own clinical practice in community health. As a graduate of Gonzaga Prep, I am also a Bulldog fan!
Since starting at Gonzaga, I have been impressed with the department culture. Everyone is welcoming and willing to help. Prior to my role at Gonzaga, I had never experienced departmental norms. I want to extend a congratulations to all my colleagues who have worked hard to implement so many positive changes.
When faced with a disagreement with a peer, how do you approach a resolution while maintaining a positive relationship?
I like to take time to see the situation from the other person’s perspective. This really helps me understand their ideas and concerns. Listening is a key piece of this process. Sometimes each side has unique information that contributes significantly to the decision process. From here, it is easier to find common ground and align our goals. I also find it helpful to engage in reflection with the other person after a decision is made. Did the plan we agreed on work? Why or why not? Do we need to form a new plan? This helps ensure continued teamwork. A final essential piece is to show gratitude to those involved in the process.
If Gonzaga's nursing department had a mascot based on a healthcare superhero, who or what would it be, and what special powers would they possess?
Spike the Bulldog with a mask and stethoscope!
Mental health is vital for both students and educators. What are some of the techniques or practices you rely on to maintain your mental well-being and foster a healthy work-life balance?
I use multiple outlets – outdoor activity, exercise, family time, reading, and art. I love swimming at the lake in the summer and skiing in the winter. With two young kids, most of my free time is spent making blanket forts and having tea parties. The last few years I have found a creative art outlet in designing a trunk or treat car for my kids’ school. This last year I built a pirate ship and a sea monster from old cardboard boxes.
Imagine Gonzaga's nursing department is putting on a talent show. What unique talent or party trick would you showcase to steal the spotlight and entertain your colleagues and students?
I was in a marimba band in high school, and my favorite song to play was “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” If the rest of my band couldn’t come, I do make an excellent grilled cheese sandwich.
