About This Event

For Our Common Home Lecture Series

This session will provide an overview of climate-induced migration in the US context, with particular attention to the impacts on and opportunities for local communities. A simple framework will be presented to help guide the conversation and help attendees better understand why it is important for small towns and large cities alike to consider how they might integrate preparedness activities into their comprehensive plans, climate action or adaptation plans, and other guiding documents. Some of the questions to consider during this session: Will climate change bring newcomers to my community and who might arrive? How can my community build capacity to respond? What welcoming infrastructure do communities need to think about to prepare for newcomers? How does welcoming advance or affect resilience and sustainability? What next steps can interested practitioners and local leaders take to advance the local conversation?

About the Speaker:

Anna Marandi is a climate resilience professional and facilitator who has been working with local and state governments, regional entities, tribes, nonprofits, and federal agency staff to enhance community resilience for the past ten years. Prior to joining HDR Engineering, Anna oversaw grant programs at the National League of Cities and supported state flood resilience efforts at the Pew Charitable Trusts. Her applied research in the area of domestic climate migration was featured on CNBC and has supported other practitioners in their understanding of this complex topic, particularly as it pertains to local government services and preparedness. Earlier in her career, Anna worked in film and television production in New York City. She continues to find ways to marry her storytelling craft and audience attunement with her strategic, policy-minded brain to facilitate highly engaging and inspiring events for participants.
