Finding Community and a Calling: Q&A with an M.A. in Communication and Leadership Alumna
Lindsey Wilson is an equestrian and workforce management & planning analyst with a passion for teaching. Driven by her long-term goal of becoming a professor and backed by her communication background, Wilson shares how Gonzaga's online M.A. in Communication & Leadership was the natural next step in her academic and professional journey.
Why did you decide to return to school for a master’s degree?
I decided to return because I felt the need to continue learning. It had been 14 years since I had graduated with my bachelor of arts in Communication and I just felt this drive to go back. It was through the Gonzaga program where I had my calling to become a professor. I will now be continuing on (at different university) to gain my PhD and become a professor.
How has the program helped you in your current career so far?
The program had helped me in my current career by understanding leadership and most of all understanding more of myself. It has set me up for success in the ability to teach part time (adjunct) for a university out here in Las Vegas, NV.
What was it like building community in an online program?
It was great! Both students and professors have been such great assets, it felt like being in person. Everyone is so supportive of others. Imagine having to do a group project virtually. One would be stressed or worried about it but all the students are here to learn and are here by choice and that and the inclusiveness of Gonzaga makes those types of projects easy!
What was your experience with the faculty like?
Wow, the faculty, is absolutely amazing. I have never received such wonderful feedback, help, and support as I have at Gonzaga. Every single person even the adjunct professors take the time and care to help you out.
Have you done an immersion either in-person or online? If so, what was your experience?
I did immersion online and while I was super nervous to do so, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great way to meet and learn from not only your professors but your peers which you will walk (virtually) through the program with. It was a long 3 days, and there is definitely some zoom burnout but the professors know that and allowed time for us to do work off camera. I created my website during that course, and have used it and added to it in other courses as well.
What advice would you give to someone considering the COML program?
Even if you think you know why you are here, you don’t. Throughout the program you will learn and understand things about yourself that you never knew existed. You will have many “ah ha” moments, and then it will finally all click. This program is not only about learning what is important about communication and leadership, it is also about learning more about yourself. I task you with being open to the change that you will see.
