Building Scholarship and Space: The Ongoing Legacy of Clarence “Bud” Barnes
Dean Emeritus and Professor of Economics Clarence “Bud” Barnes is widely regarded as one of Gonzaga University’s most transformative academic leaders. His tenure as Gonzaga’s Dean of the School of Business Administration was marked by vision, integrity and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Barnes’ leadership extended far beyond administrative duties—he cultivated a culture of innovation and collaboration that elevated both faculty and students.
Today, Barnes continues that commitment as he still teaches classes each semester, and now through a significant philanthropic investment that advances Gonzaga’s academic mission in two distinct ways. His support establishes the Barnes Faculty Scholarly Publication Recognition Award and funds a major renovation of the courtyard outside Jepson into a new plaza and outdoor classroom to be unveiled in fall 2026.

A CHAMPION OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT
Barnes believes that the strength of any academic institution lies in its faculty. Throughout his career, he has invested deeply in faculty development, creating opportunities for professional growth, research and scholarly engagement. He understands that when faculty thrive, students benefit and the institution flourishes. His initiatives have provided resources for faculty research, supported participation at major conferences, and encouraged interdisciplinary scholarly collaboration. These efforts not only advance individual careers but also strengthen Gonzaga’s reputation as a center for academic excellence.
AN ARCHITECT OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Under Barnes’s leadership, the School of Business Administration achieved significant milestones. He guided the school through rigorous accreditation processes, expanded academic programs and championed curricula that prepare students for leadership in a rapidly changing world. His strategic vision ensured that Gonzaga remains competitive nationally while staying true to its Jesuit mission of educating with care for the whole person.

A MENTOR AND ADVOCATE
Barnes’s influence is personal as well as institutional. He is a trusted mentor to countless faculty members, offering guidance, encouragement and wisdom. His door is always open and his counsel is sought by colleagues across disciplines. Barnes’s advocacy for faculty is rooted in respect and a genuine desire to see others succeed. He celebrates their achievements and works to secure resources that enable their scholarly pursuits.
A CONTINUING IMPACT
Barnes continues to serve Gonzaga with distinction. His involvement in strategic initiatives and philanthropic efforts reflects his enduring commitment to the University’s mission. He remains a visible and inspiring presence, reminding all who know him that leadership is not about titles—it is about service, vision and the ability to empower others.
A LEGACY TO HONOR
Through the Barnes Faculty Scholarly Publication Recognition Award, Barnes’s investment will recognize and reward faculty whose work advances knowledge and elevates Gonzaga’s academic reputation. Complementing this commitment to scholarship, the transformation of the Jepson courtyard into a dynamic outdoor plaza and classroom will create new space for learning, connection and collaboration, extending Gonzaga’s academic environment beyond traditional walls. Together, these investments reflect Barnes’s enduring belief in faculty, students and the power of education to shape lives.
