This October, Gonzaga’s ever-expanding mosaic of alumni and friends network adds yet another gem to its rich diversity of affinity groups. October 11 marks the debut of the Gonzaga Lavender Alumni and Friends Community, connecting LGBTQ+ alumni and students through educational, social and professional development, and philanthropic programming.

The Gonzaga Lavender Alumni and Friends Community is the next step for GU, one of the first Jesuit institutions in the nation to establish an LGBTQ+ center on its campus, and an animation of the University’s commitment to human diversity.

“Having an official alumni community is not just a beacon of inclusion; it’s a testament to Gonzaga’s commitment to fostering a diverse and empowering academic community,” said Jamie Bartlett, director of Gonzaga Lincoln LGBTQ+ Resource Center.

“By nurturing a space where LGBTQ+ graduates can connect, share their experiences, and rally around important issues of the day, the Lavender community honors their history and paves the way for a more equitable and accepting future for all Zags.”

The alumni group’s launch coincides with National Coming Out Day and Gonzaga’s annual Lavender Mass, including a special reception that evening. More information about the Lavender Alumni and Friends Community can be found here.

“The launch of this community is a clear demonstration of where the University’s heart is — with and for others,” said Joe Poss, vice president for University Advancement.

“For generations, Gonzaga has been so blessed to have a richly diverse community of alumni and friends, and we are truly thankful for the opportunity to celebrate and connect them together through the Zag network.”

Creating and nurturing inclusive and welcoming communities is a tenet of the Jesuit tradition, said Drew Rieder, senior director of Regional Chapters and Affinity Communities.

“We’re very grateful for the good work our LGBTQ+ community is doing on our campus and in the world,” Rieder said. “Lavender Alumni and Friends is yet another way to cultivate social and professional ties within our diverse family of GU alumni and share the special spirit of Zag Nation.”
