Service Immersion

CCE’s Immersion programs offer week-long trips in local communities where students learn about a variety of social justice issues and reflect on their experiences. During the immersions, students focus on core themes of simplicity, community, spirituality, and Justice and learn alongside community partners.

Justice in January - January 8th through 14th (dates may vary by site)

Justice in January is a week-long immersion experience where students explore the realities of immigration and border issues along the U.S./Mexico border and enter into dialogue with individuals impacted by immigration, community leaders, non-profits and government agencies. During the immersion, students have the opportunity to cross the border to learn from and serve with organizations that provide assistance to and accompany migrants.

The semester prior to the immersion, students enroll in SOSJ 280, a 1-credit course that provides a brief sociologically-informed political, economic, and cultural overview of the U.S./Mexico border. Students utilize this common baseline of knowledge to inform their immersion experience.

The Justice in January immersion cost is $850 and covers all travel and program costs including transportation, lodging, meals, and a donation to host organizations and a one-way flight to Spokane from the Immersion site at the end of the trip.
