Interlibrary Loan Service
For material not owned by Chastek Library, you may request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL). The ILL Office is located adjacent to the Circulation Desk. Contact Carolyn Hood (509) 313-3755 to initiate a request. Steps for using ILL are outlined below.
Determining if Items are Available On Campus
Before submitting your request, first look in Primo, the library’s discovery catalogue, and the library’s subscription legal databases, including Westlaw, LexisNexis, Bloomberg Law, and HeinOnline, to see if the item is available locally. We do not request items if they are available electronically or at one of the Gonzaga University libraries unless the item is lost or otherwise not available. Materials from our library consortium (WIN) libraries can be requested by changing the search scope in Primo to “Books in Partner Libraries,” conducting a search, and placing a request.
Identifying Bibliographic Information
If the items are not available locally, use WorldCat to obtain correct identifying bibliographic information–the exact title, author, journal title (if applicable), publisher and publishing date, ISBN, pages you are requesting, and so forth. Also note which libraries own the item. By identifying the material you need as specifically as possible, you will expedite the ILL borrowing process.
Requesting Interlibrary Loans
Once you have located the bibliographic information, there are several methods for you to request the item:
- Call or e-mail Carolyn Hood with the full bibliographic information, or
- Complete an ILL form at the ILL office, or
- Make a direct request for an item from within the WorldCat database. Just click on the ILL icon and fill out the ILL form.
Whichever method you choose, please indicate if there is a date after which you will no longer need the item. The average time for obtaining material though ILL is one to two weeks. Esoteric or rare items can be difficult to locate and may not be available through ILL or may require a lengthy waiting period. Every effort is made to process it within one working day.
Using Interlibrary Loan Materials
You will be notified by e-mail when requested material arrives and, if you are available, the items will be delivered to your office; if you are not in your office, the materials will be placed on the ILL shelf at the Circulation Desk. All items must be returned to the Circulation Desk by the due date with the exception of photocopies. Photocopies need not be returned unless specifically marked with a due date. Items borrowed through ILL are subject to recall by the lending library. To renew ILL items, contact Carolyn Hood (509) 313-3755 before the due date.
