About This Event

Kirk Besmer, Ph.D., professor of philosophy and the 2018-21 Distinguished Professor for the Humanities, presents “Why Our Tech-Driven World Needs the Humanities.” Most attempts to capture the effects of technology on society begin from quantitative analyses, such as how many hours a day we spend in front of screens, the prevalence of social media use among teens, etc. While these analyses are immensely useful, by themselves, they fail to capture important qualitative aspects of technologies on our lives. Dr. Besmer will argue that a humanities-based approach better captures the broader implications of technology on individuals, and society as a whole.
