January 2022 Full Message

We all belong to one family, God’s family – the human family. And no one — no one — is outside His embrace.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu from his 2012 Commencement Address at Gonzaga University

Happy New Year Zags!

January seems to be coming in with a bit of a roar, and you, the Gonzaga community, have been on our minds — specifically, how you connect with us in the Office of Alumni Relations. We are fortunate to be at the “front door,” welcoming you and your connection to your Alma Mater.

Alma Mater is Latin for “nourishing mother,” which feels very appropriate in this moment. In times of twists and turns, the words “nourishing mother” provide a clear compass for this work. I hope that when you think of Gonzaga University, your Alma Mater, it brings you comfort in knowing that we are not just a school or place you earned your degree. I hope you think of us as a caring community—a family— with shared values (and differences), and a steadfast mission to serve others as we navigate life. Together, we are a nourishing community with room for all.

Your Alumni team is energized daily by the evidence we see in our community. The impact you are making in your careers, families, and through service to the world is inspiring. It is an honor to see and share your updates on the Zag Alumni and Friends social media channels (follow along and we promise to brighten your day!). Join in celebrations and reflections like the recent reflections on the beautiful life of alumna, The Honorable Mary Fairhurst ('79, J.D. '84), and her incredible positivity and perspective throughout her health battle.

Zags, let’s stick together in 2022. Let’s spread smiles, reach out for support, and be the light to others. Together, let’s nourish this community, and allow ourselves to feel the comfort of God’s embrace in each day.
