The Council on Equity, Inclusion and Intercultural Awareness (the Council), established in 2016, includes a standing committee to focus on recruiting and retention issues across the University. This committee will identify and recommend evidence-based strategies to recruit and retain a diverse faculty, staff and student population for undergraduate, graduate and law programs. This includes assessing policies, procedures, and practices both written and unwritten as they pertain to attracting applicants, interview processes, feedback mechanisms, resources and support systems available, developmental programming, and hiring motivations.
One example of initiatives being developed to advance this goal is the Underrepresented Minority Teaching Post-Doctoral Program. This collaboration of the Graduate School of the University of Washington and Gonzaga University’s College of Arts and Sciences, was inaugurated in the fall of 2016. Under this program, newly minted UW Ph.Ds from underrepresented populations spend two years at Gonzaga, supported by host departments and senior faculty mentors. The post-doctoral teaching fellows help to fulfill departmental teaching needs, bring new perspectives and contemporary knowledge of their fields to these departments, and help to diversify our faculty. The fellows get to explore the life of a teacher-scholar at an institution like Gonzaga as they consider their vocations in higher education. Beginning with the fall semester of 2017 we will have four Underrepresented Minority Teaching Post-Doctoral Fellows at Gonzaga, two in their first year and two in their second year of the program.
