SUBJ: Changes in the Office of VP for Mission
DATE: August 26, 2010

Late last week, Fr. Steve Hess, S.J., who has this past year served as Interim Vice President for Mission, informed me that he would not be continuing in this capacity for the coming academic year. Steve has shared with me that this was a difficult decision, but that the Provincial, Very Rev. Pat Lee, S.J., has asked him to assist with other work in the Oregon Province during the coming months, even as he pursues other permanent job opportunities in Jesuit higher education that have been presented to him. Steve has indicated to me that, among other responsibilities, he will be working at the St. Joseph’s Parish in Seattle. I am, and will always be, very grateful to Fr. Hess for his willingness to step into the interim role during this past year, and for the work he has done to foster and support activities, programs, and events with a focus on the institution’s Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic mission identity.

In view of this change in circumstance, I have decided to appoint a Mission Advisory Group which will exist to perform several critical functions during the coming year. First, it will work to create, perpetuate, and sponsor programs and activities that foster opportunities for our faculty and staff to engage in a variety of mission-related educational and conversational opportunities. Second, it will facilitate collaboration between the Jesuit Community, the various key constituencies of the university, and the administration as regards the apostolic mission of Gonzaga University. Third, it will assist me in developing a specific charge for the Office of Vice President for Mission, which in turn will assist us in the search for the next Mission Vice President.

I am pleased to announce that Sr. Mary Garvin, S.N.J.M. and Fr. Steve Kuder, S.J. have agreed to Co-Chair this Mission Advisory Group. The formation of this Group is now underway, with solicitations for nominees having been made of the Faculty President and the President of the Staff Assembly. Once the group has been formed, I will announce it to the Community.  In the meantime, the day-to-day business of the V.P. Mission will operate out of the President’s Office. Thank you.
