Robert and Carol Palencar Scholarship

Bob and Carol Palencar of Williamsburg, Virginia started this endowed scholarship fund in December of 2005 in memory of their parents Rose and Joe Palencar and Blanche and Claude Smail.

A native of Vernon, British Columbia, Carol graduated from Gonzaga in 1963. She taught school in Sacramento, California and Pirmasens, Germany before marrying Bob in Sacramento in 1978.

Bob, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is a graduate of the University of Nebraska – Omaha. He served twenty years in the United States Air Force before becoming a stock broker and eventually joining his brother to start a wholesale lumber business in Baltimore, Maryland.

Carol worked in the lumber business with Bob for several years. They retired in 1995 and have enjoyed travel, golf and fly fishing on Idaho’s Teton River.

Carol fondly remembers her four years at Gonzaga. The Jesuit influence, rigorous academic schedule, and friends she met have had a life-long impact. Carol and Bob are avid followers of G.U. basketball and look forward to each new season….even though they take a ribbing from certain people who like to call Gonzaga “Gonzales.”

Bob and Carol have a daughter, Donna, and son-in-law Tommy, who live in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Their scholarship was established in 2005 for undergraduate students with good academic standing and financial need.
