Mark Steeves

G.U. Alumni Association Scholar, '95-'98

B.B.A., Finance, '98

Mark SteevesMark’s family has quite a legacy at Gonzaga University. “My grandfather was inducted into Gonzaga's Hall of Fame for his time as a hockey player. All six of his children graduated from Gonzaga, and my parents met at GU, both graduating in 1971. I was the first grandchild to graduate from GU. Grandma Agnes Steeves still supports the school and she sports a GU license plate with ‘ZAGNES’ personalized on it.”

As a student at Gonzaga, Mark’s activities provided a colorful backdrop to his studies in finance. He redshirted his freshman year with the soccer team, volunteered at the YMCA after-school program, worked in the conference services office, and played guitar during his senior year at the coffee house in the Crosby Center. “My mom showed up from Boise because she couldn't believe her shy son would get up in front of about 100 students and sing some songs for an hour. I had a blast.”

Mark’s degree in finance is getting a good workout; he is a bank examiner for the FDIC. “I assess the risk banks pose to the FDIC deposit insurance fund. As examiner-in-charge, I lead a team that reviews loans and banking operations to determine ratings of several components. Also, I am a subject matter expert in the Bank Secrecy Act, and review banks’ information technology programs to assess whether they have controls in place to protect customer information as well as establishing controls within their network to assure confidentiality, integrity, and accuracy.” The work is fun and challenging, Mark added.

“It was an honor receiving the Alumni Association Scholarship,” he said. “I was excited for the opportunity to use the scholarship to help me earn a degree from the school that means so much to my family.”
