Miscellaneous - SUMMER Deckhand in Alaska
Posted Date: 4/7/2016
Description: Here's a little more information about the job, some of the drawbacks, and try to paint a picture of your duties and timeline. The boat is a gillnet tender and we buy salmon. I don't know if you know what a gillnetter is but it's a relatively small fishing boat and they fish 40-60 miles from the nearest processing plant. We run to different areas along the fishing grounds at scheduled times and offload the gillnetters of their catch which we then run back to town so the fish can be processed while at its freshest and so the fishermen can keep fishing and be better producers. We sign a contract with a specific processor and we have a fleet of fishing boats that are loyal to our company. We also bring the fishermen fuel, fresh water, groceries, parts and supplies, and tons of ice. We are often at our busiest in port unloading catch, back loading ice and supplies, etc. We have a crew of three, myself and two deckhands. My younger brother will be my first deckhand, and I'm basically looking for the right person to round out the crew. We all work together, there is literally no job I will ask you to do that I myself will not do with two exceptions: I won't wash dishes, and I won't clean up after you. The reason I don't wash dishes is because I tend to do most of the cooking. You are probably asking yourself why I am spending so much time on washing dishes and it is because in 10 years of running this boat I have had more trouble with crew over this than for any other reason. We travel on the ocean and a neat and tidy boat is safer. It is no fun cleaning up after we take a big wave and the crew has left the galley a mess. I have almost fired 3 deckhands for their laziness when it comes to very simple and quick chores. I have sailed for thousands of days on over 20 boats from Panama to the western tip of the Aleutians and 2/3's of those days was as cook and I never left a dirty dish in the sink. That's why crew does dishes. I'm not your mother. I expect you to clean up after yourself. You will share living quarters with my brother. You will be expected to do your laundry and bathe regularly. I know it sounds stupid but these are issues I've had to deal with in the past. Every year I have run the boat I've had a greenhorn (inexperienced sailor), sometimes two. Don't worry about knowing your knots or some of the terminology that comes with boating and fishing. I'm a pretty patient teacher. You will be expected to supply your own wet weather gear and fishing license. The license costs $200 and only covers commercial fishing, if you want to sport fish from the boat (we do constantly) it costs another $100. You will need rain gear and boots and if you have questions about what to get I would recommend Xtratuff boots and medium duty bib overalls and rain jacket, Helly Hanson, Grundens, and Guy Cottons are all good brands and cheaper in the Seattle area than up here. You also need to pay your way to get here (Ketchikan), which is usually a little less than $500 round trip from Sea-Tac or by ferry from Bellingham. I like to see the deckhands show up about 10 days before we sail to help get the boat painted and set up for the summer. This isn't paid help but it gets you the job. The boat is the F/V Champion. She is 75' long, wood hulled, built in 1935-1936. She's a classic but also not the most comfortable boat to live on. She is noisy and all of your clothes and belongings will smell of old wood, diesel and bilge so don't bring your nicest gear, don't worry no one will notice if your sweatshirts are stained and your jeans have holes in them. I usually bring one nice of clothes set for our random nights off in town and keep them separate. You will be classified as self-employed and you can take your pay in draws of up to 80% of what you've made to that point or in a settlement at the end. The owner doesn't withhold for social security or federal withholding so it's a good practice to set aside some of your settlement for the irs. This is turning into the longest email I've ever written so I'm going to end by saying that I feel as though I'm getting paid to be on vacation. We watch a lot of movies on anchor, play a lot of Xbox, jig for halibut, etc. And see a part of the world that very few get to see without paying a lot of money. We live and work in close proximity and spend almost every hour of the summer together, it's a pressure cooker and we have to get along.
