Program Highlights

  • This course is designed to offer students an opportunity to earn three elective credits while studying and serving with UNHCR in Humenne, Slovakia. 
  • Students will spend two weeks learning with faculty, students, UNHCR workers, NGO partners, as well as faculty and students from host country. 
  • The course will also include excursions to local universities, non-governmental organizations, historical sites and museums and regional trips to Budapest, HU and Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Poland.

Course Description

The Leadership and Accompaniment course in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was designed to meet the Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic mission of Gonzaga University. By accompanying refugees while working with UNHCR, students will develop knowledge of traditions and cultures different from their own, contributing to a more holistic understanding of the human family and appreciation of and respect for different cultural traditions. Learning opportunities provided in the course will encourage students to develop self-knowledge, self-acceptance, restless curiosity, desire for truth, a mature concern for others, and a thirst for knowledge. 


drpopaDr. Adrian B. Popa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership. Dr. Popa holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology from University of California at Irvine, a Master Degree in Social Work from California State University of Long Beach, a Master Degree in Public Administration and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from University of Utah. Before Dr. Popa came to Gonzaga University he worked as a research analyst at University of Utah contracting with federal, state, and community programs. This work also provided foundational opportunities to work in grassroots leadership development with refugees from Croatia and Sudan. Prior work included family counseling in the hospital and medical setting at Loma Linda University Medical Center, CA. At Gonzaga University, Dr. Popa teaches in the areas of Organizational Ethics, Research Methods, Leadership and Imagination, and Leadership and Hardiness.

His research interests focus on leadership and hardiness, the role of psychological hardiness in post-conflict societies, and moral imagination.  Dr. Popa is active in various organizations, presents at international conference and serves as editor of AUDEM: The International Journal of Higher Education and Democracy.

Dr. Popa was born and raised in Romania, where he continues to visit, serve, and partner with colleagues on academic projects and endeavors.

Marie Wilson has served as a Protection and Resettlement Officer for the UN Refugee Agency for the past 17 years. She works to advance the refugee cause in Boznia Herzogovina, Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia, in the Russian Federation, Hungary, Slovenia and in the US.  Marie has trained at the Post-Graduate Naval Academy in Monterey, CA in the Leader Development and Education for Sustained Peace program. She is also a graduate of Gonzaga's MA in Organizational Leadership program, holds an MA in Medieval Studies, English & Canadian Literature from Charles University in the Czech Republic and a graduate of University of Edinburgh, Scotland in the Fellowship studies of Scottish literature and literary theory.

Application Process

Early Application is encouraged.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis up to the application deadline or until the program is filled.  Operation of this program is subject to administrative approval and is dependent upon meeting the minimum enrollment. 

  1. Submit your completed Application Form along with $400 non-refundable deposit that is applied to the cost of the program.
  2. Provide an official copy of your Graduate Program standing; Gonzaga students do not need to submit a transcript.
  3. Upon receipt of these materials, your application will be reviewed by the Graduate Professional Studies Committee.  Upon notification of acceptance to participate in the course you will be sent a Financial Contract.  This Financial Contract needs to be signed and returned for your application to be considered.

Program Cost

Cost includes: Tuition for three credits, accommodations, some group meals, local group transportation, AirMed, and International Student Identity Card.

Passport must be valid for six months after the end of the study abroad program.
