Dean's Message

Dear Friends of Gonzaga Engineering,

I would like to begin with deep and sincere thanks to Dennis Horn whose leadership helped create a school with  enthusiastic faculty, extraordinary students, and virtually unlimited potential for impacting both engineering education and the profession over the coming decades.  Thank you, Dean Horn, for making my first days at Gonzaga so easy!   This is an exciting, inspiring, busy time in my life, as well as in the lives of my wife (Julie) and our three boys (23, 18 and 13).  For those who have already come by to greet me, thank you, it has been a pleasure to meet you!  I look forward to meeting many more of you as we move through this coming academic year.

This has been a year of great accomplishment for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).  The number of graduates from SEAS this year is 144, the largest-ever class of graduates from our programs!  Our students (working with Noel Bormann and Mara London) captured a $90,000 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 8th annual People, Prosperity and the Planet competition for their project focused on improving the health of women and children in Zambia through better air and water quality.   Our graduates are pursuing interesting new opportunities, including John (Alex) Maxwell who has received a Fulbright Fellowship for studies in Scotland.  The Transmission & Distribution program enrolled 15 students into the Master’s Program and has become financially self-reliant following the end of its start-up grant.  The KEEN initiative continues to challenge and improve our undergraduate offerings:  ten Gonzaga students will travel to Chicago in September to compete in the Chicago Innovation Chase.

I should note that, based on my two weeks of working with the people in SEAS, these accomplishments are not surprising.  SEAS is composed of a creative, visionary faculty dedicated to finding the best educational experiences for their students and a compassionate, motivated staff who create miracles every day.  I have met several Trustees and Regents for whom support of Gonzaga and SEAS is an act of love and long-term commitment.  Finally, I look forward to meeting our students who, in the opinion of the people mentioned above, are our greatest resource and asset.

I look forward to serving SEAS and Gonzaga through the coming years: it is a true honor to be trusted with this position.  I would like to invite each of you to be in touch and to come by and see the excitement building in this School.

Dean Steve Silliman
