Avista Air Core Generator Stator

Our team was tasked by Avista Utilities to design, construct, and test a coreless stator, permanent magnet axial flux generator for wind power applications. By removing the typical iron core of the stator coils and leaving only air, the weight of the generator can be reduced significantly. Therefore, when the generator is mounted to a turbine at the top of a tower, there will be less stress on the tower and foundation.

This leads to savings in the design, construction, and maintenance aspects of the windmill’s overall cost. We constructed a custom mock up in order to demonstrate generator performance, as well as the weight savings achieved by removing the iron core stator.
