Sociology Home

The Department of Sociology offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. The study of sociology helps the student to develop an awareness of the connections between our individual experiences and the groups to which we belong. Learning the theories and methodologies of sociology provides students with an excellent foundation for a variety of careers, including law, government service, teaching, and business. The requirements for a major in sociology have been designed to facilitate the acquisition of skills in social scientific theorizing and research design. The student may use the credits available in electives to pursue an interest in a specific content area of the discipline such as social inequality, social psychology, social institutions, or deviance.

Where Are They Now?

Skye Miner graduated from Gonzaga University in 2012 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. The following fall she enrolled at Brandeis University for a one-year master's program in Sociology. After graduating with her MA in May 2013, Skye moved to Montréal to begin her PhD in Sociology at McGill University. Currently, she is working on her dissertation proposal which involves an ethical analysis of cross border reproductive care. She is also continuing her research that she began at Gonzaga with Dr. Andrea Bertotti Metoyer.

“The Gonzaga Sociology Department provided me with strong methodological and theoretical training that served to be an essential foundation for my graduate school work. My participation in the undergraduate research group and position as a research assistant for Dr. Andrea Bertotti Metoyer gave me invaluable hands-on experience. These opportunities gave me both the confidence and training to perform my own research in graduate school.”
