All students who major in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to demonstrate competence in a second language. Students beginning study in a second language they have not previously studied can fulfill the requirement by completing one year at the beginning level (courses numbered 101 and 102). Students continuing study of a second language from high school must show competence at the intermediate level (courses numbered 201). This can be accomplished by attaining a passing score on the proficiency examination or by passing a course at the intermediate (201) level. Non-native speakers of English who have completed the required English core credits at Gonzaga may petition the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences for a waiver of this requirement. The languages regularly taught at Gonzaga are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, Japanese, and Spanish.

Students continuing in the study of a second language from high school are required to complete the placement assessment (PLACE) and consult with the Modern Languages department if they have additional questions about where they should start when continuing their second language studies. The following example is a general guide to placement, however, the quality of high school courses and student performance will also be a factor in how well a student scores on the placement assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What if a student studied more than one language in high school?
The student can choose to start a new language at Gonzaga, or continue one of the languages studied in high school. When continuing with a language previously studied, only one placement test is required.
2. What if I didn't do well in my high school classes? Can I start in 101 so I can review?
101 classes are for beginners - students with no prior experience in that language. Students are not required to continue with a language from high school. In this situation, you might consider taking a new language. If you want to continue with the same language, you will take the placement test and begin in 102 or 201, depending on the results from the placement test.
3. What is on the test? Should I study for the test?
The test includes reading, writing, and speaking sections. It is not necessary to study for the test. Immediately prior to the test, you might spend 15-20 minutes reading in the language in order to prepare to work in the language.
4. What if I speak a language other than English at home?
Generally, if you graduated from high school in the U.S., you will be required to demonstrate competence in a language other than English through a proficiency test or a class. Students who are non-native speakers of English may petition for a waiver of the language requirement after completing the required English core credits.
5. How will I know where I place?
Both the student and the advisor will receive an email informing them of the placement.
