Our theme and interest communities provide students the opportunity to live and interact with others who share their same interests.  The living/learning communities offered for 2008-09 are:

If you have a passion for helping others, striving for social justice and reaching out to make your community a better place, this is the community for you. By participating in this program, you will have the opportunity to live and learn with other students who share your passion for social justice/service and collaborate with the Center for Community Action and Service Learning (CCASL).

Benefits and Features

• “Make a difference” in peoples lives.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff and community partners in meaningful endeavors
• Preference in registering for PHIL 201-Human Nature (as a 2nd year student)
• Co-educational living in suite-style accommodations

Requirements and Expectations

• Available only to students still subject to on-campus residency requirement
• Contribute 2 hours of community service per week in addition to academic service-learning courses or other programs
• Mandatory attendance at all reflection activities
• Attend a minimum of 50% or more of all hall service programs offered each semester
• Participate in Reality Camp (pre-orientation activity) and Spring Retreat

For this theme community, there is a special application and selection process.  To obtain additional information, please contact the Center for Community Action and Service Learning (CCASL) Office, 509-323-6824.  Also, please indicate your preference for this community when you complete your Housing and Residence Life Application/Agreement.

If you are majoring in engineering and have a passion for the engineering profession, this community may be for you.   In partnership with the College of Engineering, this community offers engineering students the opportunity to explore their interest in engineering through “out-of-the-classroom” activities.

• In-hall engineering related educational and informational workshops offered during the evening hours
• In-hall social events for engineering residents and formal dinners with professional engineers
• Faculty mentorship and participation in programs and workshops
• Hosted tours of engineering sites and workplaces
• Co-educational living in suite-style accommodations

Requirements and Expectations

• Available only to students still subject to on-campus residency requirement.
• Must be an engineering major on record and in good academic standing.
• Active participation in all social, informational and educational programs throughout the entire academic year.
• Desire to establish relationships with engineering faculty on a more personal level

Outdoor Adventure and Leadership

Do you like to experience the outdoors “up close and personal” and have a passion for the responsible stewardship of our natural resources?  If so, the Outdoor Adventure and Leadership community may be for you.   In partnership with the GU Outdoors program, residents of this close knit community may participate in a variety of outdoor adventures, plan and lead outdoor activities, and share their outdoor skills with others.  Some of the adventures include hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, boating, skiing, etc.

• Free access to all outdoor recreation equipment
• Convenient participation in planned outdoor activities
• Easy access to others who share your outdoor interests for spontaneous activities
• Co-educational living
• Library with numerous outdoor books, guides, and magazines
• Free and automatic membership in Spokane Mountaineers club

Requirements and Expectations

• Available only to students still subject to on-campus residency requirement
• Actively participate in the outdoor adventure programs and be inclusive
• Willingness to share your personal outdoor adventure skills with others
• Assist in the planning and implementation of outdoor adventures
