'Faith, Film & Philosophy' Lecture Series Nov. 4-7

The Faith and Reason Institute at Gonzaga University and the Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith & Learning at Whitworth University will sponsor the 3rd annual Faith, Film and Philosophy Lecture Series Nov. 4 -7 to be held at both campuses.

All of the lectures and the student panel are free and open to the public. There is a $5 fee for all of the “professor films” shown at the Magic Lantern. This series aims to encourage students and community members to explore the complex relationships between faith and reason in contemporary culture, film and literature. Following is a listing of the events for the Faith, Film and Philosophy Series:

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m.

Showing of “The Lives of Others” (2006, German with English subtitles), followed by discussion with Gonzaga University Professors Brian Clayton and Richard McClelland. Admission: $5 per person. Thursday, Nov. 5, 3-5 p.m.
Public panel discussion on “Human Transformation in Film”student papers, with Whitworth and Gonzaga students. Location: Weyerhaeuser Hall, Room 111, Whitworth.

Thursday, Nov. 5, 7 p.m.
Lecture, “All Things Shining: Putting Light on the Screen,” by Roy Anker, professor of English, Calvin College. Location: Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall, Whitworth.

Friday, Nov. 6, 7 p.m.
Lecture, “Aristotle Goes Hollywood: Popular Film and Moral Persuasion” by Daniel McInerny, associate professor of philosophy in the Honors College at Baylor University.
Location: The Globe Room, Cataldo Hall, Gonzaga.

The Gonzaga University Faith and Reason Institute is dedicated to developing an integrationist understanding of faith and reason through a philosophical investigation into both the nature and results of scientific research and through critical discussion and reflection on topics in philosophical theology. The Institute aims to achieve these ends through the sponsorship of curriculum enhancement efforts, scholarly research, and public programs. Located in Spokane, Wash., Whitworth is a private, liberal-arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The university, which has an enrollment of 2,600 students, offers 53 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
