Dr. J. Michael Stebbins, Director


J. Michael Stebbins, Ph.D., is the director of the Gonzaga Institute of Ethics. He holds a doctorate in theology from Boston College (1991), where his major and minor fields of concentration were systematic theology and Christian ethics, respectively. He received a B.A. in philosophy from Gonzaga University (1977) and a B.S. in nursing from the University of Washington (1981).

From 1994 to 2000, Dr. Stebbins served as a Senior Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center, located at Georgetown University, where he directed the Arrupe Program in Social Ethics for Business. In that role he worked primarily in the areas of business ethics, organizational leadership, and the spirituality of work, and designed seminars aimed at helping executives and managers explore the different ways in which well-run businesses can make a significant contribution to the common good.

Dr. Stebbins taught in the interdisciplinary Perspectives in Western Culture Program at Boston College from 1989 to 1992, and taught ethics in the Religious Studies Department at Gonzaga University from 1992 to 1994. Prior to graduate studies, he worked as a registered nurse on the Advanced Care Unit at Children's Hospital in Seattle. He serves on the board of the regional Better Business Bureau (Eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Montana) and on the Ethics Committee of Coffman Engineers, Inc.

Dr. Stebbins and his wife Mary Kay have five children.
