History of the College of Arts and Sciences

Last fall, Gonzaga University celebrated its 120th anniversary of the founding of  the College of Arts and Sciences, Gonzaga's first academic school. Since its founding in 1887 by Fr. Joseph Cataldo, S.J., Gonzaga has transformed itself from a college to a university, from a one-building school for solely boys to 94 buildings for both genders of all backgrounds and faiths.

On Oct. 20, 2007 we kicked off the celebration with the official renaming of Gonzaga's Administration Building to College Hall. Father Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., along with numerous trustees, regents, faculty, staff and students were on hand to formally dedicate an official place for Gonzaga's hallmark of education.

Find out how Gonzaga survived through fires, world wars and influenza outbreaks, all the while staying true to its mission of offering a humanistic, Catholic and Jesuit education by clicking on the links below.
