Types of Employees

Types of Employees - All types of employees are employed at will.
  1. Employee Status:

Regular Employee - "Regular" employees are employed in positions normally expected to continue from year to year.

Regular Fixed-Term Employee - "Fixed-Term" employees are employed in a regular position for a specified period of time (normally one year or more) and are eligible for University sponsored benefits.

Temporary Employee - "Temporary" employees are employed for a specific period of time or for a seasonal or non-recurring work project. Temporary employees do not receive University-sponsored group benefits. Credit for temporary service is granted if the employee converts to regular status with no more than four weeks break in service. Temporary status is normally for a maximum of one year.

Full-time Employee - "Full-time" employees are scheduled to work at least thirty-two hours per week on a regular basis. Employees working in nine, ten, and twelve-month positions and a minimum of 32 hours per week are considered full-time.

Part-time Employee - "Part-time" employees are scheduled to work fewer than thirty-two hours per week on a regular basis, or any number of weekly hours but for fewer than nine months per year.

Salaried Employee - Employees working the normal University work weeks of either thirty-seven and one half hours or forty hours (in selected departments) are "salaried."

Hourly Employee - Employees regularly working schedules of more or fewer than the normal thirty-seven and one half hours are "hourly."

Exempt Employee - Employees classified as Executive, Administrative, and Professional are "exempt" and are not eligible for overtime compensation.

Non-Exempt Employee - Employees classified as Staff are "non-exempt" and are eligible for overtime. The Fair Labor Standards Act defines overtime as hours worked over forty hours in a work week.

    • Classifications/Titles - Job classifications and titles are designated by a position's duties and responsibilities and Federal Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines.

Staff - "Staff" positions fulfill a variety of support functions. Typical titles are Secretary, Clerk, Custodian and Program Assistant. Personnel generally report directly to a supervisor or department head, and are non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Professional - "Professional" positions require specialized training or a college degree. They are not normally department managers or primary budget officers. They perform specialized, intellectual, artistic, or varied work in professions with recognized status based on knowledge gained principally through study. Typical titles include Program Coordinator, Advisor, Nurse, Accountant, and Coach. Professionals are exempt.

Administrative - "Administrative" positions have the primary responsibility of managing a recognized school/college or department; in some cases, assistants to these positions are in this category. They are normally primary budget officers; their work relates to management policies and general department/school operations. Deans, Directors, or the equivalent, and those immediately subordinate to them, such as Assistant Director or Assistant Dean, if their primary activity is administration, are in this category. Administrative positions are exempt.

Executive - President, Vice President, Corporation Counsel, and any other positions designated as executive by the President. All Executive positions are exempt. Generally, the President implements personnel policies affecting Executives, with guidance from the Cabinet, Trustees, and Regents.
