125th Anniversary

City of Spokane Proclamation

WHEREAS, in 1881, Father Joseph Cataldo, a Jesuit with the Rocky Mountain Mission, did, at the request of Spokane City leaders, commit "to build up a great university" on the banks of the Spokane River to provide the frontier community with the intellectual infrastructure to grown and prosper; and

WHEREAS, throughout its 125-year history, Gonzaga University has supported the changing needs of the region, establishing schools of Arts & Sciences, Law, Business, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Professional Studies to prepare citizens with knowledge, skills, courage and imagination to improve the well-being of the region and the nation; and

WHEREAS, as a nationally recognized, four-year university, Gonzaga is routinely listed as one of the West's best comprehensive regional institutions of higher eduction, with a co-ed student body of more than 7,800 earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in over 75 fields of study and distinguished alumni serving in government, business, law, health, non-profit and other sectors, including more than 8,400 alumni who have chosen to make Spokane their permanent home and who, along with more than 1,100 faculty and staff, provide a cornerstone for the region's educational, cultural, social, economic, and spiritual development, as well as a foundation for Spokane's growing University District; and

WHEREAS, Gonzaga University's ethos of community service and civic engagement has earned distinctions nationally and benefited the Inland Northwest with thousands of hours of voluntary leadership and support; the University's successful athletic teams have engaged thousands of residents in the excitement of college sports and made the Bulldogs "Spokane's Team:"

NOW, THEREFORE, I, David Condon, May of the City of Spokane, on behalf of the citizens of Spokane, hereby proclaim Thursday, January 24, 2013, as


in the city of Spokane and courage citizens to recognize the distinctive value of this great institution in our community and celebrate the extraordinary and long-lived partnership we share with Gonzaga University.
