A short description about your current occupation/grad school:
As a project manager for The Strategy Group, a political consulting firm specializing in direct mail advertising for Democratic campaigns and progressive causes, I manage our production and accounting operations in the Los Angeles office and assist with creating mail plans to ensure victory for our clients on Election Day.
A short description of your career path:
I'm a first generation college student. When I came to Gonzaga, I discussed my career plans with Dr. Leiserson, the Pre-Law advisor. He suggested that I consider a career in the practice of politics in either campaigns and/or government. I took his advice, followed my passion and embarked on an exciting career in Politics. Since graduating from Gonzaga, I worked on a congressional campaign and in the California State Senate Majority Leader's Office. In June 2007, I joined the Obama for America campaign in New Hampshire as a field organizer. I campaigned in New Jersey and Texas and worked on the Delegate Operations Team in the campaign's Chicago Headquarters and with the floor operations team at the Democratic National Convention. After the election, I went to Washington, DC to work for the Presidential Inauguration Committee as the Entertainment Coordinator for the Youth Ball.
What has been most valuable to you from your Gonzaga education?
To be effective when working on a campaign, you have to understand the voters' concerns and what inspires them before you can ask for their support. I found Gonzaga's core curriculum helped prepare me for this profession. The curriculum provided me with a foundation in formulating arguments and effectively communicating my thoughts. The courses, especially philosophy, provided me with intellectual growth that transformed my approach to my education and now my career. Service learning was a tremendous opportunity to take what was learned in the classroom and see it in tangible form through service to others.
Is there anything else about your Gonzaga experience you would like to share?
Gonzaga offered me many leadership opportunities on campus. I felt the school empowers students to get involved on campus and take on leadership roles in student government, clubs, residence hall councils, intramural teams, and campus ministry regardless of your major or year.
