School of Education Graduate Application Requirements

Application items are to be submitted to the School of Education Graduate Admissions Office. In special circumstances, students applying for admission will be permitted to take graduate courses for six (6) semester credits maximum while their graduate application materials are completed and considered. No more than six (6) graduate credits are applicable toward the degree before admission.

General Admission Requirements:
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.

  2. A completed graduate application form.

  3. A $50.00 non-refundable application fee (check, money order, or credit card payable to the School of Education GraduateAdmissions). The fee is waived if the applicant is a prior Gonzaga University graduate. 

  4. One (1) official transcript from each college or university attended. (International applicants must submit foreign transcripts in the original language and an English copy). If you attend Gonzaga, please note that GU transcripts are ordered by the Graduate Admissions Office on your behalf.

  5. Official scores from the Graduate Records Exam (GRE) general aptitude test or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Scores must be less than five years old. This requirement may be waived if you have completed an advanced degree. (This requirement does not apply to the Leadership & Administration program or the Master of Initial Teaching program and is waived for Gonzaga University graduates applying to the Special Education Department.)

  6. Two (2) confidential recommendations to be sent directly from the recommending persons. Gonzaga University confidential recommendation forms are required. (Please note: family member recommendations are not accepted.)

  7. A written statement of purpose addressing the applicant's interest in graduate studies relating to some area in the field, assessing the applicant's current strengths and describing what the applicant hopes to gain from a master's degree program. If using a letter format, please address the letter to Dr. Jon D. Sunderland, Dean. Please check with the department for which you are applying for further instructions specific to the department.

International students:
  1. Submission of an official TOEFL score of at least 550 by each international applicant who has graduated from a foreign college or university and whose native language is not English.

  2. Submission of a financial declaration and supporting documentation by each international applicant.

Additional or waived requirements see specific program below:
  1. MIT applicants are required to send in two (2) official transcripts from each college/university attended and do not need to take the GRE/MAT for admission.

  2. Master’s in Leadership and Administration requires a professional resume and two recommendations – one from a supervisor and one from a colleague. GRE/MAT tests are not required for admission.

  3. M.Ed. in Special Education requires a professional resume.

  4. MA in Sport and Athletic Administration does not require applicants to take the GRE/MAT tests for admission and a professional resume is required.

  5. MA in Anesthesiology Education applicants must take the GRE (MAT not accepted) and the requirement will not be waived if you have an advanced degree. It’s also required that the applicant submits a photocopy of their RN license and CCRN certification. A professional resume and only one official transcript from each college or university attended are required.

  6. MIT Special Education applicants must submit a resume as well as send in two (2) official transcripts from each college/university attended.

  7. MA in School Counseling applicants are required to send in two (2) official transcripts sent from each college or university attended.

*Note: Departments may have additional admission requirements, such as requiring an interview. Please check with the department to which you are applying for additional information.
