The Gonzaga-in-Florence program offers courses to challenge, maximize, and enhance your study abroad experience in Florence. Expand your mind as you expand your horizons! In keeping with our Jesuit ethos, the GIF faculty and staff are committed to academic excellence and offer a liberal arts and business curriculum that enhances the development of the total self. By taking full advantage of the resources in Florence, the faculty challenges students to think critically and to create global awareness. Gonzaga-in-Florence is accredited through Gonzaga University. Students are required to take two courses.

Our vision is to develop a holistic component to the travel program that brings into equilibrium students’ experiences in the classroom and during their travels. The success of Gonzaga-in-Florence depends upon both traditional instruction and experiential learning. We aim to provide these elements in a balanced environment that promotes growth as individuals and as a community. In order to achieve these goals, the travel and student life staff organize each trip carefully.

Opening Tour

The program begins with the Opening Tour in the eternal city of Rome on May 16, 2012. We tour the ancient, medieval, and Renaissance city, including St. Peter’s, the Vatican museums, the colosseum and more. 

Weekend Trips

The Gonzaga-in-Florence academic schedule provides opportunity for optional organized  and independent travel. Past weekend trips have included: London Pisa, Amalfi Coast (Sorrento & Pompeii), Interlaken, and Cinque Terre.

The Mozilo Center

Gonzaga-in-Florence is located in center of Florence, not far from the Duomo, looking onto the Giardino dei Semplici, a sixteenth century garden created by the Medici family.  It is a few steps from Michelangelo’s David  housed in the Galleria dell’Academia.  Gonzaga-in-Florence,  housed in the Mozilo Center, provides students with all the facilities required for learning and socializing, including the latest technology. In addition, the center's Martin Library collection consists of over ten thousand volumes. For research, students have access to Gonzaga University's Spokane campus Foley Library. A student lounge and fitness center are located on the lower level..

Room and Board

Our students live in Italian boarding hotels (pensioni) near the school, run by Italian staff who provide good food and safe living conditions. These living arrangements are conducive to learning Italian and to better understand Italian culture and lifestyle.  Each pensioni generally accommodates anuwhere from twelve to thirty students. Most of our pensioni are co-ed, although the rooms (double, triple, and quad) are gender specific. Since the majority of the students usually travel during weekends, partial board is included.

* This is the preliminary estimated cost and may increase slightly for summer 2012. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it impossible to specify an exact cost at this time. Gonzaga University reserves the right to adjust the program cost. The estimated program cost includes tuition, shared room, partial board, Opening Tour, technology fee, International Student Identity Card, and Italian medical insurance. Deposit

Students admitted to the program must reserve their place with a non-refundable $500 deposit within two weeks after acceptance.  The deposit is applied to the program cost. The summer deposit is non-refundable after March 15, 2012.

Additional Expenses

In addition to the program fees, other costs include textbooks, round-trip airfare, and participation in optional weekend trips. Individual student habits, independent travel, and currency exchange rates should all be taken into consideration when planning a budget.

You must have a current passport. The expiration date of your passport must exceed the end of the program by at least sixmonths. If you do not have a passport or your passport will expire, apply for one now.
