The servant-leader is servant first...It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.
The conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead...
The best test, and the most difficult to administer is:
Do those served grow as persons?
Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous,
more likely themselves to become servants?
And what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit or, at least, not be further deprived?
(Greenleaf, 1977, pp. 13-14)

Robert Greenleaf introduced his philosophy of Servant-leadership to organizations in the late 1960s. Thirty-five years later the concepts of servant-leadership seem to still be on the rise as academic and organizational leaders continue to appreciate the impact of Greenleaf's many very insightful and often prophetic writings.

Accept this invitation to become a Servant-leader-in-training.   Be introduced to the Servant-leadership philosophy, and give a structure and language to what you are likely already working to achieve in the development of others.    For about five hours per week, explore the fundamentals of Servant-leadership through readings and lessons, engage in activities of your real life to test out the concepts, and share reflections with a limited number of participants over a period of four weeks.

Our Gonzaga instructors daily apply Servant-leadership in their organizational settings based on fundamentals they learned in our master's programs.   They utilize an established course designed by Gonzaga faculty Dr. John Horsman to facilitate your learning journey and to deepen their commitment.

The seminar activities including readings from short books we provide that feature some information on the basics of Servant-Leadership and also stories and examples of how organizations implement the approach.  There are also some items on the seminar website to read and review – powerpoints, diagrams, short papers, and video clips.  The main readings are scheduled for early in the week, followed by posting to a discussion board on T or W, then other readings or reviews and most postings on Th and F.  You’re invited to review other’s postings and respond on F and even Sat if needed – we want the seminar to be a discussion among the participants.  There is no specific time when you need to be available – completely at your own schedule.

Price: $295 per person; includes books and materials.   Non-profit and government special rate of $245 per person.
