Journal Club
The DPLS Journal Club experience is meant to be informal, enjoyable, and intellectually stimulating. The Journal Club is a forum for you to present journal articles, book chapters, or other scholarly works to colleagues. The interdisciplinary nature of our program should prove a rich context for surprise and delight. We would like to keep the presentations short and succinct and give everyone that wants to a chance to present.

- Prepare a brief presentation preferable with a short handout to participants (we can copy handouts on the day of the club up until we get a general idea of participation). The handout should follow the format suggested below.
- Meeting rooms will be equipped with computer and projector - Feel free to bring a memory device or access your presentation is you so desire.
- Present your article.
Guidelines
Students ‘sign up’ with the facilitator before and up to the beginning of the session. Each person gets 10 minutes or less to present their article. They present according to the following set of guidelines.
-
- What is the purpose of the reading and the apparent main focus of author?
- Can you explain the broad applications of the work to leadership studies?
- What is the availability of the article? Please describe the intended audience – also include brief description of the journal.
- What is your response to the author?
Benefits
It has been my experience as a teacher and as a scholar that communicating important ideas is both a skill and an art. The skill of presenting comes with practice and these meetings are meant to help with that practice. The art of presenting comes with blending increased skill with experience. These presentations can also become part of your CV in preparing to find a job teaching!
These forums are also potential sources of inspiration and motivation for students and candidates that are searching for a theoretical perspective or framework – or even a topic. The context of the Journal Club is meant to be supportive, innovative, playful, and deeply serious about the topics at hand. We invite everyone in the program to attend.
