Graduate Student FAQs


1 . Where do I live in Spokane?^

There are many living options for students.  Visit the Off Campus Living web page to find more information.  Additionally, if you are interested in living further away from campus please view the regional map located on the Spokane Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau website.

2 . What is the cost of living?^

The Spokane region has a very competitive cost of living and was named the cheapest place to live in the Pacific region by Forbes Magazine on July 14th, 2009.  For more detailed information on Spokane, please visit http://www.greaterspokane.org/live-work-visit.html.

3 . Is it possible for graduate students to sign up for meal plans?^

4 . Are graduate students eligible for basketball tickets?^

Student basketball tickets are available on a first come first serve basis per game.  Only 1 ticket is allowed per student with a current Gonzaga student ID.  Graduate as well as undergraduate students are eligible to receive a ticket.  Guidelines for ticket distribution are announced in the Student Morning Mail prior to games.

5 . What are the costs for using the Rudolph Fitness Center?^

It is approximately $150/semester and $50 in the summer.  The fitness center has a full weight room, cardiovascular machines, an indoor running track, racquetball courts, a pool, a full locker room, and an extensive list of activity classes.

6 . What is the class schedule/load?^

Full time graduate students are required to take a minimum of 6 credits (2 classes) per semester.  They may take up to 10 credits without being considered overload.  Fees are assessed on a per credit basis.

7 . What are possible internship opportunities?^

Opportunities range from potentially working on campus with the Fitness Center, Intramurals, or Athletics.  Within the Spokane area there are a number of opportunities to work with professional franchises such as a AAA baseball team, indoor Arena Football, Premier Development League (PDL) soccer team, etc.  There are also opportunities to work with neighboring colleges and community sport organizations such as the Spokane Regional Sports Community.  There are also opportunities to work outside of the Spokane area with prior approval and permission from the Program Director.

8 . Does the program require summer school?^

Yes, students will take a minimum of 1 campus course and should a student decide to, they may take a Practicum course.  The on campus course typically runs from Mid-May through the last week of June.

9 . What does parking cost?^

Parking permits cost anywhere from $60-100 depending on lot and residential status (on-campus or off-campus).

10 . What is a Graduate Assistant and how do I find out more information?^

Graduate Assistants typically teach undergraduate classes in our extensive physical education activity program.  Applications for Assistantships are to be submitted to the MASAA program director and should include a letter of request addressing your qualifications for an assistantship position.  Applications for graduate assistantships are accepted until positions are filled, but candidates are encouraged to apply by February 15 for priority consideration for the following fall semester.  For more details, please visit the Graduate Assistantship web page.

11 . What forms of transportation are there in Spokane?^

Spokane is located 7 miles from the Spokane International Airport and has an extensive public transportation system.  In addition to the public buses, the Centennial Trail is located to the south of the Gonzaga University campus and can take you downtown in a few minutes via bicycle or walking.

12 . What is there to do in Spokane?^

If you have not already received it, you will receive a magazine highlighting Spokane area attractions from the Spokane Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau.  Spokane is a four season city with everything from extensive outdoor activity to a vibrant downtown with activities ranging from symphonies, Broadway plays, and multiple golf courses.  The city is also located close to rivers, lakes and ski resorts.

13 . How many students are in the program?^

Approximately 30-40 students are in the program at any one time.

14 . What are the job opportunities on and off campus?^

There are volunteer opportunities and paid jobs within the University.  You may visit the Student Employment web page for information regarding off campus jobs.  For specific department jobs, you should contact the department you are interested in working for regarding potential job opportunities.
