Graduate Assistantship in Philosophy Description & Duties The Gonzaga University Philosophy Department offers optional Graduate Student Assistantships in Philosophy. Each eligible, full-time, first year graduate student will receive graduate assistantships worth three credit hours of financial aid in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Two of the three credits will be given in the form of a graduate assistantship, i.e. as work aid, and the third credit will be given in the form of scholarship aid. Each student will be assigned to a professor each semester, and will be required to assist her assigned professor with courses and/or research according to the needs of the professor. Each eligible, full-time, second year student will receive graduate assistantships worth three credit hours of financial aid in that year, which in most cases will be in the Fall semester. Again, two of the three credits will be given in the form of a graduate assistantship, with the same responsibilities and expectations from the students as stated above, and the third credit will be given in the form of scholarship aid. In addition, the Department will award one particularly deserving incoming student a graduate assistantship that includes three credit hours of financial aid in both the Fall and Spring semesters plus six credit hours of financial aid for the summer of the student’s first year. Thus the student receiving this award must be willing to take two courses (6 credits) during summer sessions. The financial aid for the Fall and Spring semesters will be divided between work and scholarship aid in the manner described above. The financial aid for the summer will also be divided between work and scholarship aid but the student will work for the entire faculty of the department rather than being assigned to a specific faculty member. The student receiving this award in her first year will be eligible for the same financial aid as the other students in her second year. Eligibility In order to be eligible for a graduate assistantship each first year graduate student must be both fully, as opposed to provisionally, accepted into the program and enrolled full-time (at least 6 credit hours of coursework each semester of the regular academic year and at least 6 credit hours in the summer). In order to be eligible for financial aid in their second year each student must be enrolled full-time and determined to be making satisfactory progress towards the degree in the judgment of the graduate committee of the Philosophy Department.
