Gonzaga Mathematics Honors and Awards

Pi Mu Epsilon Banner

Gonzaga is a proud Chapter of the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematical Honor Society,
Washington Epsilon.

"Pi Mu Epsilon is a non-secret honor society whose purpose is the promotion and recognition of scholarly activity in the mathematical sciences among students at the academic institutions that have been chartered as Chapters of the Society. Pi Mu Epsilon accomplishes its goals by promoting and recognizing scholarly activity among students through active, vibrant Chapters that:

  1. Elect Members on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics;

  2. Engage in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its Members; and

  3. Take other measures designed to further the purposes of the Society."

Gonzaga's Mathematics Department issues three separate student awards.

1) The Carsrud Award

An award given to a graduating senior mathematics major.  The recipient of the Carsrud award should be an outstanding mathematics student. In years when no such student exists, the award should not be conferred. Members of the department will nominate students for this award, and then the departmental awards committee will choose a winner.

2) The MAA  Award

 An award given to exceptional junior mathematics majors. This award includes an MAA membership which the student will enjoy during their senior year. Members of the department will nominate students for this award, and then the awards committee will choose a winner. Students are chosen for this award based upon ability and effort. We also look for students who personify the ideals of our discipline.

3) The Underclassman Award

An award given to the most promising freshman or sophomore in a mathematics class. This award includes a framed certificate. The winner will not necessarily be a mathematics major. Members of the department will nominate students for this award. The nominees will be invited to take a computerized mathematics test at a specified time. The nominee with the highest exam score will receive the award.
